vintage but not thrifted
I totally meant to blog about this right after Christmas and just never got around to it, so better late than never right! :) I am always seeing wonderful thrift finds on everyone else’s lovely blogs, and sometimes get a bit jealous (or at least wish we had good thrift shopping where I live). Well I finally have something vintage-ish to share (although not thrifted)…
This book was actually originally owned by my great-grandmother (Nana) and when she gave her sewing machine to my grandma who later gave it to my mom, she meant to include this book. (Mom, correct me if I get any of this wrong :) Anyways when Nana passed away, my grandma found this book & gave it to my mom a month or two ago, who then gave it to me this Christmas because she knew I would like it. (Did you follow all of that? :)
I have not had much time yet to look through it, other than flipping through it a little bit to take these photos. It is mostly text & illustrations, but has some wonderful inspiration inserted in with these color photos & designs. I love how even though this book is from 1969 (okay I know that isn’t super old, but it is still before I was born:), so much of the inspiration is totally in style right now just slightly modernized. Style really does repeat doesn’t it! :)
My favorite illustration in the book has to be this dress/tunic drawing…
I would love to make a similar dress to that, although I still have several other clothing sewing projects to finish up before I start another one. (Including the skirt that I was going to make for the holidays and ran out of time because of pattern issues & having to leave to visit family. I am still planning on finishing it though, maybe I can wear it for next year’s holidays:)

What at treasure! It must be so much fun flipping through those pages!
ooh! i love it! i’m thinking my mom may have had that same book - destroyed in a basement flood, though, i’m sure. it looks like a treasure, though. i love those little bonnetted dolls.
Great book!!! Even better than thrifted with the family history that goes with it. That stinks that you don’t have any good thrifting near you! How sad! Do you have a Savers or a Thrift Town? I hadn’t ever seen either until we moved to NM but they are great if you have one near you. My Goodwill in MI was pretty good sometimes. You just never know what you might find!
That book is fabulous! You inspired me to do a similar post on my blog about some booklets of the same vintage that my mother gave me. Look for it soon on http://cultofdomesticity.blogspot.com!
What a beautiful book, not least because of the history behind it.
What a wonderful treasure.
I love that one illustration too. what a great book!
I got the same book from the thrift store a while ago, it is great.
oh i think this went beyond awesome!
That book is a real treasure. Thanks for sharing it. I have a book on skirts and intent to make one someday, but oh so easily distracted…someday!

Love the cover - looks like a great book!
