handmade cloth napkins
Yesterday I made up a bunch of cloth napkins with that fabric that I won on Anna’s blog…
I have been meaning to make some cloth napkins for awhile now, but wasn’t sure what fabric I wanted to use for it. When I got this fabric in the mail from her I thought it would be perfect for this project. I’m not really a matchy sort of person, so I love the mix-matched look of this set. :)
They were pretty easy to make, for each one I just cut a square in a size that sounded good to me and hemmed the edges. I thought about using my rolled hem foot to hem the edges, but decided against it. Which considering the fact that my sewing machine was competing against my computer (which is continually been trying to die for the last month or so) for the award of most frustrating technology yesterday & I have never actually successfully used my rolled hem foot, that choice was probably a good thing.
Speaking of sewing machines… If you have one, what kind is it and what is your favorite brand of machine? (Oh and why you like yours might be nice to know too.) My sewing machine & I are in a bit of a fight right now and I am dreaming about different ones:)

Oh, just lovely. I’m a matchy person, but these would be great if everything else was matched and this was just a little whimsy.
My sewing machine is a 14 year old Bernina, but I love her.
I just got a new sewing machine - a Brother and I love it. I looked on Amazon and narrowed it down to this one based on reviews. Maybe a good place to look and then you can buy it wherever. I was sewing on such a crappy machine before that I love everything about it. :) I have heard not to get a Singer because they are diff. to get serviced.
I’m interested to know what people recomend too. My Brother sewing machine of 10 yrs just died. I’m left with a 1973 singer which makes beautiful straight stiches in cotton… and thats about it. And a 1983 Singer which someone gave me (new in the box a couple days ago) that I don’t think will be much better. It seems like a lot of people love the Bernina.
ps Im in your fall swap, I hope you do more I’m having a great time!
Amy - That is kind of funny. My machine right now is actually a brother machine… Apparently it must just be the model that I bought, since my mom has a brother machine that works great (that is why I bought one) and I have heard other people like theirs too. This is actually my second one of this same machine, because the first one broke right after I bought it… So I guess it must just be this model or something! Oh well:)
Jenn-It does seem like a lot of people like Bernina. That is definitely one of the ones on my list for considering:)
I have really enjoyed organizing the fall swap, so I definitely think there might be more swaps in the future:)
Chara Michele, I also won fabric from Anna and have set it aside for something really “special” but don’t know what that is. I love the napkins!
I have a Janome sold exclusively through Sears. It has been great but I long for a machine that can anything and everything! If only money grew on trees……
I love these. They turned out great! I have a Pfaff and I love it! -kb
i’ve had my pfaff for just over a year and it’s been really great to me. i should learn more about it, however, to justify the cost.
You mentioned having trouble with your rolled hem foot. I just noticed on Singer’s web sit they have a “how to” section for all types of sewing machine feet I tried it out and used mine for the first time last night, and the instructions were pretty good. Seems like that foot is realy only good for round hems though, skirts and pant legs etc. since you can’t corner with it and the starting point is akward. Good Luck!
Great blog, love the napkins! I have a Kenmore. It’s a computerized machine with a touch screen (no embroidery) and I love it to death! Although I would love to have a Bernina some day.
Very pretty.
I really need to make some. The trouble is that we would need soooo many for my family. It would take forever.
I have an old Kenmore (I think from the 70’s, but it could be 80’s). Considering the lack of care I give it, it does okay, but it’s persnickety about tension, so I’m sort of in the market for a machine too. I looked at Bernina’s, but true Bernina’s are WAY out of my price range, and I’ve read reviews that say the Bernette’s don’t do well on denim, so that puts them out of the running for me. I’m actually looking at commercial grade Singers, cost the same as the middle of the line Bernettes, but are built to do denim.
Those are wonderful (comments envious gal who can’t sew well).
I just got a new Janome. LOVE IT! The store where I bought it has classes you can take on how to use it. I thought that was fantastic. I blogged about it so come over to check it out!
I am a quilter mainly with a 7 year old Bernina quilter’s edition 150 virtuosa. Love it! My first machine I got when I was 13 was a Kenmore and I didn’t know about taking care of it but it lasted a while in spite of it. Bought a Singer which my kids fool around with but noone touches the Bernina!
I love the napkins. I keep saying I’m going to make some and haven’t But now I”m inspired.Thanks. I also liked your apron and I have used amy butler patterns before and have run into the same problems they’re a good “foundation” but I usually tweak them a little. I have a Janome 6500 and love it, it has a big throat area and many extra stitches. Hope this helps and can’t wait to see what you buy if you purchase something.

My Mum was a Pfaff sewing machine dealer for almost 25 years and I am so one eyed about them. Gotta love that built on walk on foot (which you have to pay more for). Mine is a 1471 which is an oldie but inherited it from my Gran. Love the napkins and thanks for the swap. We are having fun with it…
i have a viking scandinavia 300. i’m learning to love it more. i would love it a lot if it “felt” heavier. it sews heavy just fine, though.
these are so much fun!
Aunt Flo loves her Janome. Give me a call. Luv ya!
These are really adorable. I would love to make some too. I hate to be just another one of the bernina-lovin’ zillions, but after trying and owning LOTS of other machines….I would highly recommend that you check Bernina out before you make your decision. Smooth! No more cursing my machine!
I had a fake Bernina (their Bernette line) for a couple years before it finally gave up the ghost. Then I bought a Pfaff Hobby (1122) and I love it. It is very basic but has a great feel to it. I had bought a Singer with a million stitches but returned it because it was so flimsy. My Pfaff wasn’t that expensive either and you never have to oil it! Bonus!
Perfect!! Love your fabric napkins.
I have a viking. It’s a great machine, but when I tried to upgrade my machine they wouldn’t let me because I had bought it in a different state. The place I purchased it (in Texas) said that the upgrade would be honored anywhere. It really ticked me off. Wish I would have just saved up and bought a Bernina.
I have a Bernina QE quilter’s edition. It’s about 5yrs old and I’ve never had any troubles at all. I love it. It cost more than my first car and probably weighs as much…
[...] have been working on making some more cloth napkins like the ones that I made in October. (Wow, this year really is flying by…) Of course the new ones are still sitting on my works [...]
